Galactosaemia | Irish Health Focus | Vhi: “How would I know if my baby had galactosaemia?

Symptoms usually develop soon after the baby is fed lactose containing milk. Breast milk and formula milk both contain lactose. The following symptoms may occur:

* Poor feeding and poor weight gain
* Poor sucking
* Vomiting and diarrhoea
* Jaundice
* Cataracts (these may be present at birth or develop after birth. Cataracts may persist despite treatment).
* Lethargy, poor muscle tone
* Low blood sugar
* Enlarged liver and impaired liver function
* Clotting abnormalities, which can cause a bleeding tendency
* Susceptibility to infection

Without treatment, galactosaemia can be fatal. About 75% of untreated babies die within the first 2 weeks of life.

Long-term effects in untreated babies include:

* Severe mental retardation
* Cirrhosis of the liver
* Cataracts”
