Every parent wants his or her sons and daughters to grow up to be wonderful human beings. However, how will the career of a child shape up has a lot to do with his or her upbringing. And the upbringing in turn depends on the style of parenting that each child’s parents adhere to. Parenting style is basically the manner in which you interact with your child and how you parent. Parenting is the most difficult job yet it is the most rewarding. Studies have categorized parenting styles into four different categories and evidences have proved that each of the styles have a tremendous impact on the overall development of a child. The four styles or parenting are authoritarian parenting, authoritative parenting, permissive parenting and uninvolved parenting.
First take a look at the authoritarian style of parenting. Here the parents develop certain strict rules and always expects the child to follow these rules. And if the child fails to follow any of the rules set by the parents he is punished. The child is always afraid of committing a mistake because of the fear the punishment that will follow. It has been seen that in these cases parents are unable to explain the logic or relevant reason behind the rules that they set. In these cases most parents are status and obedience oriented and wants their rules to be followed without any kind of explanation.
The second type of parenting is authoritative parenting. This should not be confused with authoritarian style of parenting and is much more lenient. Here too, the parents set certain rules, orders and guideline but the child is not punished if he fails to abide by it. In fact the child is encouraged to explore. The parents lay out the consequences and the child is aware of what are the consequences, positive or negative, of their choices and actions. The parents are pretty supportive of their child and want their child to be socially responsible and confident. This is more like a balanced parenting where the parents are in control but the child can make his choices and deal with the consequences.
The third type is permissive parenting. In this case the parents are not restrictive and have fewer expectations from their child. The parents permit the child to do most of the things. The parents are not control freaks and do not like to confront the child. The parents are involved in their child’s life and are responsive to his needs but they do not have much control over the choices that the child makes. As the child usually get his way always he becomes self indulgent and at times spoiled.
The last type of parenting is uninvolved parenting. In this case the parents are not very concerned about the development on their child and are permissive without involvement. Uninvolved parents are not around their kids and therefore exert no parental control. The parents are detached from the child, do not set rules and do not explain the consequences of the child’s action and choices to him. However, the parents fulfill every demand and need of the child.
