Encopresis in Children. When a toilet-trained child withholds stools long enough for them to harden, liquid stool may still leak around the partial plug to soil underpants. The child is most likely to soil himself in the late afternoon, sometimes after complaining of abdominal pain.
This condition, encopresis, or soiling, has several causes. One is chronic constipation. Other cases may involve an emotional factor, such as fear of the toilet or of the painful bowel movements associated with anal fissure. A child unable to cope with family stresses may withhold bowel movements. Discuss the condition with your doctor; do not attempt to treat it with enemas or laxatives.
