All About Teething

Posted In: baby health by Baby Tips by melbel

When a baby first starts teething, this can be a frustrating and sometimes scary experience for first time parents. Teething is usually a painful process for babies and no parent wants to want their child endure pain. Since each child grows at different rates, teething can begin as early as when the baby is three months old or continue as late as the child’s third birthday. Some babies are even born with teeth although this is uncommon.

Usually the first teeth to appear are the bottom front teeth and then later the top front teeth come in. Of course, this can differ from child to child so there is no need to panic if a canine tooth appears first. While teething can be painless for some babies, most babies experience pain when teething. Teething rings can provide some comfort to the child while allowing them something to learn to chew on. There are many medications on the market that are safe and helpful for babies who are teething. Much of this medicine is prescription medication, which is good because it’s important to talk to the child’s doctor before giving him or her any medication. Also, it’s a good idea to share any questions and concerns with the doctor about the teething process so that if a problem arises, the doctor can be “in the know” ahead of time.

The Benefits of Cloth Diapering

Posted In: baby health by Baby Tips by melbel

With the recent economic decline, many parents have switched from disposable diapers to cloth diapers. When the words “cloth diapers” come to mind, so do images of folded cotton sheets and safety pins. In reality, cloth diapering has changed monumentally since the era of safety pins. Cloth diapers are now more absorbent than they used to be, many with waterproof layers. Also, when it comes to cleanup, many cloth diapers now have disposable layers that make the job easier. These disposable layers are more environmentally friendly than whole diapers and they are much lighter on the budget.

Because of the chemicals in disposable diapers, the incidence of diaper rash has increased. While this is not exclusive to babies with disposable diapers, some 54% of one-month old babies have diaper rashes with 16% having sever rashes. The increased use of disposable diapers has moved up from 7% to 61%. Babies wearing cloth diapers also have occurences of diaper rash, but this usually occurs from the child wearing a soiled diaper.

While cloth diapers are a larger initial investment, the ability to re-use them saves a large amount of money in the long run. Many different companies compete in the cloth diapering business, so there are a lot of choices. There are many different styles and designs on cloth diapers that can make any child and parent happy.

Early doctoring comes to mind easily for parents with newborn babies. But the one thing that escapes many of them is to make sure the baby has proper dental care. Preserving your baby’s dental health is paramount to the overall health of the child. It’s been recommended by the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that as soon as the child’s first tooth appears, dental visits should begin.

It may sound at first like a racket to soak you out of some money. But in truth, the ‘first tooth’ visit is crucial to the proper forming of oral and facial development. It also gives the dentist and the parents an opportune time to map out a good schedule for the baby to get proper dental care.

Most people don’t realize that tooth decay is the most common childhood disease. If a baby has to take medications at that early stage, it’s even more of a problem. Tooth decay, even at these very early stages can cause serious problems for the child.

In today’s world, with the economy low and family budgets pinched, only three out of five children visit their dentist once in a year. Money causes the parents to put the dental visits off. The sad part is that the children who do manage to see their dentists before the age of one, have 40% lower dental costs than those who don’t. This again proves the point that preventive care leads to both sound health and good economic decisions.

When assessing a child´s ideal body weight’ in relation to their age, the impact caused by tooth decay is mind staggering. One study showed that kids with cavities were more likely to weigh as much as 80% of their ideal body weight. Poor oral health can not only affect a child at its age now, but can be a health factor throughout the child’s life.

It can increase the risk of the developing heart disease or having a stroke, as well as having babies of their own that are below ideal weight themselves.

A good pediatric dentist is well-equipped to care for primary teeth in the young toddlers of today. They must qualify by completing two to three years of advanced training, and this is ‘after’ dental school. This is preparation for addressing the needs of children and adolescents. So by going in for the ‘Baby first-tooth‘ checkup, you do your child a good service, and set the child on its way to a more healthy and rewarding life experience.
