When a baby first starts teething, this can be a frustrating and sometimes scary experience for first time parents. Teething is usually a painful process for babies and no parent wants to want their child endure pain. Since each child grows at different rates, teething can begin as early as when the baby is three months old or continue as late as the child’s third birthday. Some babies are even born with teeth although this is uncommon.

Usually the first teeth to appear are the bottom front teeth and then later the top front teeth come in. Of course, this can differ from child to child so there is no need to panic if a canine tooth appears first. While teething can be painless for some babies, most babies experience pain when teething. Teething rings can provide some comfort to the child while allowing them something to learn to chew on. There are many medications on the market that are safe and helpful for babies who are teething. Much of this medicine is prescription medication, which is good because it’s important to talk to the child’s doctor before giving him or her any medication. Also, it’s a good idea to share any questions and concerns with the doctor about the teething process so that if a problem arises, the doctor can be “in the know” ahead of time.

With the recent economic decline, many parents have switched from disposable diapers to cloth diapers. When the words “cloth diapers” come to mind, so do images of folded cotton sheets and safety pins. In reality, cloth diapering has changed monumentally since the era of safety pins. Cloth diapers are now more absorbent than they used to be, many with waterproof layers. Also, when it comes to cleanup, many cloth diapers now have disposable layers that make the job easier. These disposable layers are more environmentally friendly than whole diapers and they are much lighter on the budget.

Because of the chemicals in disposable diapers, the incidence of diaper rash has increased. While this is not exclusive to babies with disposable diapers, some 54% of one-month old babies have diaper rashes with 16% having sever rashes. The increased use of disposable diapers has moved up from 7% to 61%. Babies wearing cloth diapers also have occurences of diaper rash, but this usually occurs from the child wearing a soiled diaper.

While cloth diapers are a larger initial investment, the ability to re-use them saves a large amount of money in the long run. Many different companies compete in the cloth diapering business, so there are a lot of choices. There are many different styles and designs on cloth diapers that can make any child and parent happy.

Early doctoring comes to mind easily for parents with newborn babies. But the one thing that escapes many of them is to make sure the baby has proper dental care. Preserving your baby’s dental health is paramount to the overall health of the child. It’s been recommended by the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that as soon as the child’s first tooth appears, dental visits should begin.

It may sound at first like a racket to soak you out of some money. But in truth, the ‘first tooth’ visit is crucial to the proper forming of oral and facial development. It also gives the dentist and the parents an opportune time to map out a good schedule for the baby to get proper dental care.

Most people don’t realize that tooth decay is the most common childhood disease. If a baby has to take medications at that early stage, it’s even more of a problem. Tooth decay, even at these very early stages can cause serious problems for the child.

In today’s world, with the economy low and family budgets pinched, only three out of five children visit their dentist once in a year. Money causes the parents to put the dental visits off. The sad part is that the children who do manage to see their dentists before the age of one, have 40% lower dental costs than those who don’t. This again proves the point that preventive care leads to both sound health and good economic decisions.

When assessing a child´s ideal body weight’ in relation to their age, the impact caused by tooth decay is mind staggering. One study showed that kids with cavities were more likely to weigh as much as 80% of their ideal body weight. Poor oral health can not only affect a child at its age now, but can be a health factor throughout the child’s life.

It can increase the risk of the developing heart disease or having a stroke, as well as having babies of their own that are below ideal weight themselves.

A good pediatric dentist is well-equipped to care for primary teeth in the young toddlers of today. They must qualify by completing two to three years of advanced training, and this is ‘after’ dental school. This is preparation for addressing the needs of children and adolescents. So by going in for the ‘Baby first-tooth‘ checkup, you do your child a good service, and set the child on its way to a more healthy and rewarding life experience.

One of the biggest concerns when it comes to maintaining health and home is the quality of indoor air. However, this becomes a more pressing issue if you live in a particularly smoggy urban area, or if you have asthmatic children. While all these concerns are valid, the quality of air is even more critical for anyone with a newborn or infant child.

The Mistake Most Parents Make

There are a number of airborne contaminants lurking in your home, most of which go undetected because the average home owner simply isn’t aware that these dangers exist. These radicals linger in detergents, plastics, and cleaners. Additionally, there are some materials in the home that are natural allergen magnets, such as upholstered furniture, chairs, sofas, carpeting, and mattresses. These places harbor allergens like pollen, dust mites, and mold. Considering that most new babies are resting most of the day on such materials, it becomes crucial for parents to become as aware as possible on hidden dangers in their home – and more importantly, solid solutions to ensuring the best air quality for their child’s nursery.

Many new parents can be found placing a humidifier in their baby’s nursery. While a humidifier is a good go to gadget, it may not be ideal for certain (humid) regions or homes that already suffer from humidity related problems. The alternative may be an air conditioner, but for a baby’s delicate system, an air conditioner is far too powerful and will likely provide too much cooling.

The key issue here is air quality and to get the best air quality, parents may want to consider an air purifier. An air purifier can have the greatest single impact in your child’s environment. Once it’s agreed upon that getting an air purifier is possibly the best option for your baby, the next step is finding a high quality (but reasonably priced) device. One that parents may wish to consider is the Austin Air Baby’s Breath Air Purifier which provides the highest level of protection from a variety of airborne contaminants.

Steps You Can Take to Ensure Your Child is Safe

There are some things to keep in mind when putting your baby’s nursery together. While it may seem daunting at first, it’s very quite simple when broken down and understood. While in the old days, simply cracking open a window was enough to get fresh pure air, these days with the rise of smog statistics and pollution, traditional routes may not be the best depending on where you live.

Bedding – Whenever possible, use organic covers on mattresses and pillows. When washing these, try to use free and clear detergents that don’t include dyes or perfumes. Make sure you’re also washing linens in extremely hot water. Hot water will ensure that dust mites are killed off. Also, if you’re in the market for a baby mattress, opt for a latex foam mattress rather than a fibrous mattress (which are dust mite magnets).

Keep Shoes Out – You’re trekking through town all day and then end of the day come home and trek through your house, ensuring that everything you picked up throughout the day is now all over your carpets. One quick way to clean up your indoor air quality is to just simply leave your shoes at the door. At the very least, your baby’s nursery should be a shoe-free environment.

Cleaning – If you’ve ever whiffed an open bottle of your household wood polisher or glass cleaner, you’ll have noticed the strong chemical smells. Not only are these cleaners toxic to your healthy, they’re considerably damaging to your baby’s delicate system. Try using natural cleaners that are both eco-friendly and effective.

Walls – When setting up your baby’s nursery, one of the most common decor ideas is to repaint the room. However, before coating your nursery walls make, sure the paint you have is VOC free. VOC’s stand for “Volatile Organic Compounds”, which get released into the air as paint dries. While long term effects are still unclear, the EPA has concluded that some VOC’s are suspected carcinogens.

Furniture – What you put in your nursery is yet another cause of concern. When picking our nursery furniture, make sure you aren’t choosing products with formaldehyde. According to the EPA, formaldehyde is a “colorless, pungent-smelling gas (that) can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes, and throat, nose, nausea, and difficulty in breathing.” The reports go on to show that it has been shown to cause cancer in animals and high concentrations of it may trigger attacks in people with asthma.

The common assumption most people have is that if air quality was poor, then you could visibly see it. But the fact is, what you can’t see is even more dangerous since the problem goes undetected. The dozens of radical elements floating unseen through your air and right into your lungs will lead to significant health concerns down the road. And one of the best things you could do for your baby is to ensure the air the baby breathe is clean and chemical free.

Swine flu has been infecting millions of people around the world and it is a powerful diseases which could be a successor or a descendant of the previous deadly diseases like the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and the bird flu, which more and more people and babies have been suffered and died n the disease. They are the world’s dangerous diseases that has ever made and what concerns them is that, those people who are infected and been detected with the disease are traveling around, and more cases have been detected. Swine flu has the most cases affected than any other rare diseases, and until now, swine flu is still unstoppable to spread around the world.

One of the reasons why many people including babies are being infected by swine flu because of travel issues which swine flu carriers are traveling to their respective homes and people who are boarding the plane or a boat are infected as well, and being suspected for the possible swine flu virus. Airports have no idea how swine flu has been traveling across the world, and they have no control or some plans to cancel flights for safety measures regarding swine flu. Any management in different airports worldwide are just trying to let them go, because they do care about their money, and not the people’s health, except for the thermal scanners, which are detecting the passenger’s temperature, if they have flu symptoms, which the airport management in charge of the thermal scanner, are acting quickly to deliver the affected passenger to the hospital for some tests if the passenger is positive or negative of swine flu.

Airport management must conduct themselves a meeting or a conference regarding these issues which their area or country is affected by the wine flu virus, which of course starts with Mexico, the epicenter of the virus, and they should know that they have the power to cancel flights or travel for a short period of time in order to prevent the spread of the swine flu virus, but they don’t implemented it, and survey shows that most of the swine flu carriers came from those who have traveled in an aircraft over and over again. The management should always be ready in order for the safety of their passengers by providing medical treatments to them and to motivate those who are infected to observe self quarantine to help prevent spread of the deadly swine flu virus.

So if you care with your babies, then I suggest you cancel your trip if the destination is has swine flu pandemic, so you could avoid Swine Flu in Babies.

H1N1 virus also called as swine flu virus is wrecking havoc around the world. You would be indeed an ignoramus or have not been reading the newspapers if you never heard of this new strain of virus that has killed many people in Mexico and has spread to as many as 20 countries around the world. There have been alarms sounded across the world, as people and health agencies scramble to find a solution to this problem of pandemic proportions that has taken the world by storm. It is indeed high time that we gain some information about this virus and its symptoms.

Symptoms of swine flu are similar to but more severe than common flu. The common symptoms are runny nose, sore throat, cough, breathlessness, congestion, mucus formation, fever and temperature with chills and body pains. In some cases patients also display symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea which could complicate matters. In case of those above 65 years of age, the symptoms could get accentuated, as is the case with kids who are less than 5 years of age. Pregnant women and HIV positive folks also are at high risk with respect to the affliction by H1N1 or swine flu virus. Such categories of folks should be carefully watched over for signs or symptoms of swine flu and action taken immediately.

Swine flu is contagious or communicable. If you have any flu symptoms, do not leave home and please avoid contact with outsiders when you are under quarantine as you could spread the disease to them. If the symptoms of flu do not subside and indeed persist do wear a mask and go to visit a doctor. You also have to cover your sneezes and fomites that are the infection particles with tissue which has to be properly discarded too. Do remember that the virus can spread from day one of infection right up to day 7 so you cannot afford to be careless about yourself as you could jeopardize public health that way.

If your flu symptoms continue you have to contact a health official and get the proper tests done to determine nature of virus infection. If the flu becomes very widespread, testing may not be required and one can go in for treatment. There are specific anti viral drugs that are prescribed by medical practitioners in order to treat for H1N1 infection. Some of the most common drugs that are now well known all over the world are Tamiflu which is essentially oseltamivir and also zanamivir. It is best to get treatment early and as close to the date of infection which is typically within 2 days of infection. However treatment can be done even if detection of infection is later than 2 days from infection.

In case of swine flu infection aspirin and related drugs should be avoided by all means, as these could cause after effects or side effects like Reye syndrome which is very risky to human health. For teenagers, one must check that aspirin containing products are not contained in the prescribed medicine against swine flu. For kids medical supervision and advice is of the essence. If you see any symptoms of flu, do get yourself or your loved ones checked quickly to prevent higher severity of case of swine flu infection later.

Swine flu or influenza A (H1N1) is a strain of flu which was only seen in pigs until recently. The flu strains mainly surface among poultry and pigs. When they get transmitted to humans, they cause human epidemics. Swine flu in babies can be fatal and require immediate medical attention and treatment.

Swine flu can affect babies and cause a high risk of mortality. You should know all about the signs of swine flu to be guarded against this disease. This flu virus mostly affects very weak individuals including children. It may some times be very hard to recognize this disease in children. You can recognize swine flu in babies by looking for some indicators. By identifying these signs, you can provide emergency care for your baby before it becomes very late.

Signs of swine flu

Swine flu in babies can start with flu like symptoms. The signs of this virus are similar to many other diseases. If a child has fever more than 101 degrees subsequent to a cold it can be swine flu. Another symptom of this disease is a worsening cough. While treating the child for flu, if their cough worsens, it can be a sign of this virus.

The second symptom of this disease can be rash accompanied by fever. Some children may develop blue discoloration of skin. This may be due to dearth of oxygen and the child has to be given immediate medical attention.
The child may also stop taking fluids if he/she has developed this condition. Dehydration can be dangerous among young children and they must be taken for emergency care treatment.

The child may also develop breathing problems as a result of this disease. They may experience shortness of breath or may be breathing rapidly. In such cases, it pays to get medical help quickly so that they do not suffer adverse affects.

Some babies with swine flu may also appear uncomfortable due to sever body aches. Babies may tend to wriggle away while you hold them and suffer from acute body ache. In such cases, you must take them to a hospital for emergency treatment as it can be a sign of a swine flu viral infection.

Some babies affected by swine flu may not maintain eye contact. This is also a symptom of acute viral infection. Babies affected by swine flu may also be unable to wake up, in which cases you must call the ambulance immediately.

Swine Flu Treatment options

Swine Flu is no doubt a deadly virus. But it can be cured using antiviral medications such as Tamiflu. You can save your baby’s life by getting him treated immediately. As this epidemic can get worse before improvement, you must be clear regarding the signs of the virus so that you can get emergency care.

How to Avoid Swine flu Babies

You can help babies avoid swine flu by keeping the baby clean and not going out when he/she is ill. They should also avoid contact with sick people. Good hygiene must be maintained at home. Young children must be taught to wash their hands regularly using soap as a precaution against this disease. They must also be taught to cover their mouths while coughing and sneezing. By giving immediate medical attention you can avoid the harmful effects of swine flu on your baby.

It is normal for an infant to have baby acne. It is a condition that may be present at the time of birth or during the first three or four months of the baby’s life. Baby acnes are often referred to as Neonatal Acne. They can manifest as whiteheads and red patches that can be seen on the chin, forehead, and cheeks or sometimes, even the back. It persists for more than a few weeks. One good thing about baby acne is that it is harmless unlike the acne that you get in your adolescent years. Plus, it is easy enough to understand how to cure baby acne.

Do not worry if you see that your baby has pimples. In fact, almost twenty percent of newborn babies have it and is most common among male babies. Baby acne may be caused by the lingering hormones after giving birth that stimulates baby’s sebaceous glands. There is no real treatment for baby acne as it takes care of itself over time. It is important though, that you take proper care of your baby’s hygiene.

One important thing to remember is sanitation. Make sure that the baby’s skin is always clean and free of dirt. Stay away from places where the baby can get dirt. We all love to kiss and feel a baby’s soft skin. But be mindful of having saliva contact on the baby’s face as it may worsen the acne. A baby’s skin is very sensitive so make sure to wash the acne with a very mild soap. It is also ideal that we avoid harsh, lotions and cream because it can sometimes lead to irritation. Always use mild soaps and creams. In addition, choose a good quality detergent soap when washing the baby’s clothes because babies can get dirt and other harmful chemicals from soaps.

When you see a baby crying, the red patches and whiteheads can look fussy and may seem prominent. It is important that you leave the acne alone. It is not caused by dirt so be sure not to pick on it or even try to scrub it. And instead of putting creams or make up to cover the pimples when you photograph your baby, just learn how to edit the picture on your computer.

There are rare cases however, that baby acne can worsen. In this case, use hydrocortisone cream or ionic colloidal silver solution. Sometimes, a dermatologist may also recommend over the counter products such as benzoyl peroxide or a prescription medication. If you notice that your baby’s skin are getting more and more of those red patches and whiteheads and are appearing more inflamed over time, consult a doctor.

Neonatal acne can carry on from child birth to around three or four months old. More often than not, baby acne disappears when the baby turns one. It is important that you maintain proper care and observe the progression of the acne. This is the best step on how to cure baby acne. Of course, if you think that the acne is different, you may consult your baby’s pediatrician.

Baby ear infection is caused by the development of bacteria in the passage of the ear. Normally the little amount of fluid that is present in the canal can destroy the bacteria. However, in case if there is much accumulation of bacteria (mostly gram positive), they rapidly grow and make the eardrum vulnerable.

Baby will not tell you about the ear infection, instead you have to discover the reality. Babies usually express their discomfort by crying for a long time. Sometimes they will point to the infected ear (both the ears may be infected at times), besides there may be fluid dribbling from the affected ear. In advanced cases of ear infection, there may be blood coming down the ear. There may be fever and the appetite will surely be decreased. Ear discharges are always foul smelling.

Never ever treat your baby on your own. Although most of the ear infections are self-limiting, it is always better take him to the nearest child specialist because ear infection can be fatal at times if the infection spreads to the brain. To offer some relief from the pain, you can breastfeed the baby or apply some hot fomentation over the eardrum, but never put any ear drop before consulting your doctor.

To prevent any ear infection of your baby, you must closely watch him/her while you give him a bathe. Water must not enter the ear passage. Use disinfected soft ear buds to clean the ear passage regularly.

In contrary to our common belief, babies also suffer from acid reflux disease or otherwise known as Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It is most commonly seen in case of babies less than 1 years of age and more frequent during the 3-4 months of life. The symptoms of baby acid reflux is that he will be constantly crying after each feed. There will be belching and pain over the upper abdomen.

Although baby acid reflux is a disease that the parents often fail to discover, but with should be seriously taken. Baby acid reflux may cause vomiting of the freshly taken diet, coughing or in most severe cases difficulty in respiration. If this case is not taken up promptly, your baby may suffer from acute medical emergency called ARDS.

Babies who suffer from acid reflux disease must be burped adequately after each feed, this includes all the breast-fed and the bottle-fed babies. Some foods are to be avoided like milk (if the baby is suffering from lactose intolerance), spicy foods, citrus fruits (oranges, lemon etc.) and any drink that may contain caffeine.
Medication is to be prescribed to relieve the pain and to neutralize the formed acid, but no inhibitor to acid formation is prescribed. You may have to change the diet habit of the baby.
