INTRODUCTION of Anxiety Disorders in Childhood

Anxiety is an emotion that arises when the person feels in danger, whether real or not the threat. It is a normal and adaptive response to threats real or imagined more or less diffuse body prepares to react to a situation of danger. Fears become the kid’s nanny when he starts to walk away from the mother and begins to explore the world alone. The three types of fears more firmly established in humans are:

1. Fear of animals, reminiscent of the evolutionary fear the predators.
2. Fear of physical harm, a remnant of the atavistic fear of the dangers that can be found in nature.
3. The fear of separation, which operates in line with the previous ones and allows keeping small children close to their mothers protected from hazardous environment.

Sometimes those anxiety responses did not play an adaptive shoot in a completely uncontrolled and cause suffering for children in the experiment.

THE FEAR IN CHILDREN

When anxiety refers to specific stimuli, there is talk of fear itself. Most of the fears many children experience mild, transient and associated with a particular age who are overcome spontaneously in the course of development. Fear is a primitive alarm system that helps the child to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Fear of separation is the first line of defense if it breaks, then take action to animal fears and physical damage. From this perspective, fear responses are instinctive and universal, without prior learning, which aim at protecting children from different dangers. Innate fears can be grouped into five general categories:

1. Intense fear stimuli.
2. Fear of the unknown stimuli, such as fear of strangers.
3. Fear of lack of incentives, such as the dark.
4. Fear to stimuli that are potentially hazardous to the human species over time, such as separation, heights, snakes or other wildlife.
5. Fear of social interactions with strangers.

CLASSIFICATION OF ANXIETY DISORDERS IN CHILDREN

Anxiety disorders in childhood can be classified into three main sections which appear in others as we see in the list below:
1. Phobic disorders: Phobias specific phobia disorders and school avoidance.
2. Anxiety disorders without avoidance: separation anxiety and excessive anxiety.
3. Other Anxiety Disorders: Obsessive-compulsive disorder and mixed anxiety and depression.

Summers are meant to be about fun, vacations, and spending more time being a kid. But these days when summer vacations rolls around, most kids spend more time indoors than outdoors. Gone at the days when kids are running through the streets with ice cream trailing down their chin.

These days, most kids are spent glued to the internet, play stations, and whatever new gadget just came on the market that week. And with heat levels on the rise, more and more kids will be spending the summers indoors in the cool comfort of their home.

However, one of the biggest risks to a child’s health is the unseen and unresolved levels of mold hidden in central air conditioner units. The mold found there, often goes undetected until it’s breached the boundaries of the vent and starts spreading throughout your walls. By then, it’s too late – you have a serious mold problem and it’s in the best interest of your family to vacate your home till the issue is resolved.

What is mold?

Thriving on the very last rung of the food chain, mold thrives on very little and grows rapidly. If you’ve every forgotten to wash a container with food remnants still stuck to the bottom, you’ve been a first-hand witness to mold’s rapid growth rate. Now imagines this in places in your home that you can’t see or have easy-access to! And given the right conditions, mold can and will pop out of thin air just about anywhere. One mold organism can quickly multiply to trillions in less than three weeks simply through their constant production of spores!

Most families find out they have a mold problem when it’s too late, and the number one cause and circulator of mold is your air conditioner. While central air conditioners are a seen as a luxury item, they are also an ideal host for mold. The ductwork and drain-pans provide a perfectly moist and recessed environment for fungal growth.

How mold can harm your child

It’s doubtful that any parent would want their child around mold, but unfortunately most well-intentioned parents think that if they can’t see the problem or its effects, then it can’t be that serious. But mold causes serious health problems, especially for young children who are still developing their immune system. Mold can cause allergies, asthma, hypersensitivity, skin care problems, pneumonia, constant colds and flus, and even the possibility of bleeding lung disease – all of which will damage and weaken your child’s immune system. Letting mold perpetuate in your home is as bad as blowing air over a swamp or through a sewer and right into your home where your children live, sleep, eat and play.

Signs of mold: Wood or fabric discoloration is a big indicator of a mold problem. However, all discoloration is not due to mold. Carpeting near baseboards, for example, can be stained by outdoor pollution entering the house. Stains or soot may be caused by the smoke from burning candles or cigarettes. However, if you suspect mold, then keep a look out for discolored growth and contact a professional immediately. Note that it’s difficult to identify mold since not all of the 270 mold types can be detected through smell.

How your child can be at risk

Indoor air quality studies by the World Health Organization show that 60-80% of indoor air quality problems are mold related, and that the most notorious perpetuator of mold is the central air conditioner system lurking in your home, with ducts and vents accessing each corner of your house – making it easy for an invasive attack of mold spores without you ever knowing it.

As mold and bacteria grow in ducts and drain pans, they are distributed through ducts to your living spaces. This is an ever bigger concern if you’re child is in school or day care. In such populated settings with poor AC environments, it’s very possible for a sick child to enter the premises and get other kids sick. How does this happen? For example, if a child comes in with the flu, its a very real probability that the virus may get transmitted to the air conditioner unit and remain there till it’s redistributed throughout the room(s). This is one of the number one ways children get sick at a facility, even though they may not be near other sick children.

If you suspect your child is getting ill at their school, talk to the school’s superintendent and voice your concerns. Public buildings with poor air quality and possible mold/air pollutant problems are identified as “sick buildings”. Make sure you take action because this is a problem that isn’t going to go away on its own.

What you can do

Your best bet for avoiding mold problems in your home, or child’s environment, is to invest in a portable AC. Portable ACs are fast becoming the smart family’s alternative to cooling their home. These mobile room air conditioners offer spot cooling without the hassle of ducts and vents – all glorious havens for mold spores. Most mobile ACs now come with the multiple filters and dual functions, including dehumidifiers to remove excess mold-causing moisture from the area.

Once you’ve done what you can to ensure your child’s health and safety this summer, both you and your child can get back to the business of creating a memorable summer.

Contrary to popular belief the only older people suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, more and more kids are now are diagnosed with this illness all over the world. The type of diabetes that kids are prone with is the “type 1 diabetes.” Also known as ” juvenile diabetes,” this type is diagnosed in almost 40 children everyday in the United States of America alone.

Type 1 diabetes can be considered as the rarest type compared to other diabetes types such as “type 2 diabetes” and “gestational diabetes” but now, more and more people—especially the younger ones suffer from it. Type 1 diabetes usually occurs person’s body is stopped form producing enough insulin, which is a type of hormone that every human needs. In order to survive, people—especially kids—with this type of diabetes should have insulin injected in their bodies every single day in order to continue living.

With the help of modern technology, kids with type 1 diabetes can live a normal life because they have better options in terms of blood glucose testing and insulin administration which are just some of the common processes that diabetics undergo. To help kids cope up with their condition, more and more medical facilities now offer treatments that can help the child live an active, healthy, and a life filled with fun excitement just like other regular kids.

Dealing with diabetes in children

Parenting a child is enough challenge for a parent once he or she has decided to form a family. But when a child is diagnosed with a chronic illness such as diabetes, parenting and raising this child become more difficult, challenging and at times, frustrating. To help parents deal with their children when diabetes attacks them at such an early age, experts say that they should:

1. encourage and help the child to develop healthy eating habits. Once a child is diagnosed with diabetes, it makes his or her world smaller. There will be more restrictions especially in eating. These restrictions can lead to eating problems that will be harder to manage once they get older. So as early as now, parents must instill among their kids the importance of eating healthy and well-balanced food to avoid further diabetes complications. Parents must also make sure that the child follows the regular schedule in taking in snacks and eating meals. But if the child doesn’t want to eat a certain type of food you’re offering, don’t force him or her. Instead, give the child a variety of healthy foods that he or she can choose from.

2. ensure to test blood glucose levels regularly. The ideal frequency of blood glucose testing is at least four times per day. If possible, the parents should monitor this themselves to ensure that if the child is coping up with the condition or not.

3. instill in the child the importance of regular exercise. To avoid being obese that can lead to more complications among kids with diabetes, parents must make exercise a part of the child’s daily living. This exercise should not be so rigorous, it can be a simple walk, jog, or even helping out with household chores as long as there’s enough movement for the day.

4. reassure the child of your love and support. There are kids with diabetes who think that having the chronic illness is their fault. Many of them also think that they have that condition because they did something bad or they are not just good enough for their parents. To erase these doubts in the child’s mind, parents must always ensure their child that they will support him or her no matter and they will love the child no matter what.
