Posted In: baby cold by Infant Care

Babies can catch over eight colds a year, which will mean sleepless nights for the both of you. Coughs and colds are an inevitable part of a parent’s life. The averages baby catches over eight Colds a year, meaning frequent nights of misery for both the child and the parents.

It is one of life’s ironies that at the time when you need as much recuperation as you can get, sleep can seem very far away. The more exhausted you feel, the more you can be sure that your baby, even if she has been fine all day, will suddenly catch a fever when you are trying to get a good night’s sleep yourself!

Childhood coughs and colds are more common in bottle-fed, rather than breast-fed babies. This is because your breast milk is packed with your own antibodies. These are our bodies’ natural defense against infection. You will have built up immunity to a huge range of infections by having them yourself at some stage in your life. Some of this natural protection is passed from you on to your baby before birth. This pre-birth immunity tends to wear off quickly, but you can top up your baby’s resistance by breastfeeding for as long as possible.

The tips below will help you deal with most of the baby cold symptoms you will come across and the advice will also tell you when to seek medical help.

+ Steam is an extremely effective way of aiding your baby’s breathing. This is especially important in winter, when central heating can make the atmosphere very dry. A flat bowl of warm water placed on the radiator overnight, or a kettle boiled in your baby’s room (well out of baby’s reach) can be very useful. If your baby is disturbed or distressed by coughing at night, give him a sauna.

+ Fill the bath up with really steamy water (much too hot for either of you to touch) until the bathroom is full of vapour. Sit in the bathroom with your baby for up to half an hour.

+ Viruses, not bacteria, which cause the baby colds. This means that antibiotics won’t help. These can also have side effects when used by children SB

+ Most baby colds improve on their own within five to seven days. Sniffles can be treated with saline nose drops, cotton buds or a nasal sucker.

+ Try and ensure your baby gets as much liquid as possible. Don’t forget that your baby will lose water through her skin when she has a fever.

+ A pillow or blanket under the head end of your baby’s mattress may help your sniffly baby to breathe more easily.

+ Never smoke in the house if you want to help your baby’s cold.

+ His coughing may sound distressing, but it does serve a purpose. As long as your baby doesn’t have any of the warning signs listed below, coughing benefits your baby by clearing mucus from her throat and chest.
Cough mixtures rarely help, and should usually be avoided in children under the age of one. Coughing is rarely worrying if your baby is feeding and breathing normally.

A normal body temperature of a baby should be about ninety eight degrees Fahrenheit. If it becomes one degree to three degrees above its normal value, then it is considered as a fever. An infant’s immune system is not fully formed and not as efficient in fighting off infections especially on the first few months of the baby’s life. This is the reason why it is very important to learn how to accurately take a baby’s temperature. In case it gets higher than the normal temperature, you need to know how to cure infant fever.

baby fever

Fever can be caused by a lot of things. However, more often than not, fever is caused by an infection. When the body’s immune system perceives a ‘trespasser’ like a certain bacteria or virus, a chemical message is transmitted to the brain’s temperature center making the inside of the body hotter than the usual. Sometimes, it is better to be thankful if a baby has a fever because it tells us that there may be an infection and that something is wrong.

If a baby is not more than two or three months old, it is crucial that he or she gets a proper medical attention. Fever on babies of four to six months, depending on the gravity, can be well taken care at home. Be sure to keep the appropriate and accurate thermometer, while the digital one is probably much better. If the baby’s temperature spikes up beyond the normal temperature, give your baby plenty of fluids to drink in order prevent dehydration. This also helps in cooling the baby’s body, thereby decreasing the possibility of making the fever even higher. Plenty of rest is also recommended for the child to feel much better afterwards. Ensure that the baby gets plenty of sleep when sick. Moreover, you can keep the room temperature at around seventy to seventy four degrees Fahrenheit as much as possible. This also helps the body temperature cool down. Dressing the baby in light cotton fabric will help the heat escape from the body.

A bath in lukewarm water can also sometimes help lower a fever. Before the bath however, acetaminophen may be given to the child. In the event that the baby is chilled especially after the bath, remember to put on an extra blanket and monitor it closely. As soon as the chills stop, remove the extra blanket to help maintain the temperature of a child. Be mindful of how the medicine is given. Always read the label for instructions.

If you think that there is no need for you to read this post; think again. It is not that you would not find another post. It is just that you would find it difficult to find the same quality.
We have tried to present you with a post on Baby’s Cold and I sincerely hope that you would make use of the post and get benefit out of it.

If you think that reading a post is an easy task, think again. Reading does not mean just reading without paying attention to it. If you need to gain something about Baby’s Cold, do read this post with concentration.

Your baby’s cold can be just as hard on you as it is on her. But you can help ease your baby’s discomfort and keep the infection from worsening by ensuring she gets sufficient rest and liquids, which would include breast milk or formula if she’s less than four months old. Older babies can have a little water, and by six months she can begin drinking juices.

If you are reading this post on Baby’s Cold, I would surely like to ask you whether this reading really added something to your overall knowledge. If the ansIr is yes, it means that I we able to achieve what I set out to achieve.

To relieve congestion, try squeezing some over-the-counter saline solution drops into each nostril, then suctioning with a rubber bulb syringe after a few moments to remove the mucus and liquid. This works well about fifteen minutes prior to a feeding if it’s difficult for your baby to breathe nasally while nursing. A bit of petroleum jelly to the outside of your baby’s nostrils can help reduce irritation.

Sitting with you in a steamy bathroom while the hot water’s on in the shoIr for about 15 minutes, or using a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier to increase the moisture in your baby’s room should also help provide some relief for her. A warm bath could also work, and might provide her some additional comfort.
Sleeping at a slight incline may also help relieve postnasal drip. HoIver, don’t use pillows in her crib to accomplish this; the risk of suffocation is too great. Try placing a couple of rolled up toIls betIen the crib springs and mattress, or you might also want to try allowing her to sleep in her car seat in a slightly upright position.
Be sure to contact your pediatrician at the first sign of any illness in an infant less than three months old, especially in instances of a fever of 100.4 degrees or if she has a cough.

Your pediatrician can give you guidelines about what constitutes a fever in older infants. If baby’s symptoms don’t improve within five to seven days, her cough worsens, she’s wheezing or gasping (possible pneumonia or respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV), or tugs at her ear (possible ear infection), your pediatrician should also be notified immediately.

That is all I had to talk about Baby’s Cold and if you are satisfied with what you have learnt here, our task has been fulfilled.
