5 Fun Games the Entire Family Can Play
Games played by adults — either with each other or with older children—are increasing in popularity.
In choosing a game, thought should be given to the tastes and interests of those who play it. Is the game intended for family fun, thoughtful pastime or serious tournament-type playing? There is a wide variety of games for adults. The following representative sample gives a general idea of the kinds of games available:
CARD GAMES — Many games use playing cards, but remember that bridge, poker and pinochle decks are different — either in size or content. Card players usually -prefer accessories (score pads, poker chips, cribbage boards, etc.) to be standard size. Some cards stick to a special magnetized board which can be used outdoorsh or indoors by bedridden patients. Some card games use special decks, or special equipment.
BOARD GAMES — Some board games are designed for family play while others are primarily for adults. Among family games are the old favorites like Parcheesi and Monopoly, the famous business game. There are also business games and popular war games. In addition, many games are based on sports – baseball, football, auto and horse racing.
Nontopical board games like chess, checkers and backgammon are available in many price ranges. There are peg or magnetic chess and checker sets for travelers or for those who like to leave a game set up to continue later. Game chests combine a number of games in one package. A well-known variation is Chinese checkers.
WORD GAMES — The popular game of Scrabble has been joined by Apples to Apples and Boggle. The latter two have hourglass timers to eliminate arguments about taking too long in play. Scrabble is also available in French, German and Spanish.
PHYSICAL SKILL GAMES — Throwing games come in many variations with Darts being popular for recreation rooms. A game such as Flip Flop uses metallic circles that stick on a magnetized board and this type of throw game may be preferred if small children are in the family. Billiard tables and table tennis sets vary widely in price, and their size must be considered. Some games fit on a card table. For instance, Jet Billiards is played by four persons using hand bellows to keep a cork ball moving across a board.
NUMBER GAMES — Home sets for Bingo come in many forms with the higher-priced sets having automatic number selectors, and Roulette sets are widely available.
