If the Baby Cries Uncontrollably for Hours It Can be Colic
It can be really very upsetting for a mother of six weeks old baby to see the baby crying continuously for no rime or reason. It is true the baby can be continuously crying for hours altogether despite the fact that the mother can be cautiously attending to the needs of her child. He/ she must have had their course of feed, sleep or other natural needs properly yet would find that the child cried uncontrollably for extended hours particularly every evening which could be the matter of concern. The infant must be suffering from Colic pain.
I personally know of a baby who developed colic symptoms and cried every afternoon continuously for three to four hours. A newborn baby, who otherwise was a happy one, did not worry his mother otherwise with feed and toilets slept properly all through the night started crying uncontrollably during afternoons at the age of five weeks. The parents were very upset as the doctors merely termed it as colic pain. There was nothing they could do to keep the baby diverted during afternoon. Poor mother just saw her child crying all through that time. Surprisingly, all this crying ended with time. It subsided in six to eight weeks time and the child was back to his happy mood. The baby was suffering with colic pain.
It is said more than twenty percent of infants suffer from colic pain. Many of us believe that colic in baby is caused because of an immature digestive system of the infant. With an infant’s digestive system still in developing stage till about the age of three months it is believed that colic comes with that immature digestive system and so the child has spasms. But still some say that the spasm are a result of extended crying of the babies as there is very little besides mother’s milk (even if the baby is on breast feed it can have spasms) for it to have indigestion. Some say the colic is the result of an immature nervous system, which causes the baby to be tense in response to normal external stimulation and so he /she cries uncontrollably. Still others say that the milk, either from the mother or the bottle feed, may be the cause of indigestion and hence the colic.
Although babies can be crying at any time, most babies with colic symptoms cry more in the late afternoon or evening. Usually the general baby colic symptoms are that the baby’s face gets terribly red with continuous crying. He/She would pull their legs to the stomach and they fully stretch them to indicate the spasm. Their feet may get cold. Hands can be clenched. A very usual symptom is that some babies refuse to eat and become fussy only after eating. The babies will find difficult in staying asleep and may push themselves to fall. The babies may lift their head or legs and pass gas. These are enough of an indication for parents to understand that the baby must be having colic.
