In general, it is believed that babies start to get colic pains from around the age of three weeks, that gets worse when the baby is about six weeks old and then it usually stops from around 3-4 months of age. It is said that the real cause of infant colic is still being researched and hence not known until now, but there are many theories attached to the reasons for a baby to have colic. Babies can cry loud and continuously for 1 to 3 hours at a stretch which can continue for days or even weeks .The most important advice given to parents during these hard times is firstly checking with the baby’s pediatrician making sure that there is no other medical cause for the baby’s crying and be sure that it could be colic. Once the baby has been given a clean chit then all that is advisable is to keep the baby comfortable and calm during the episodes of crying.

But it is to be considered that most babies react differently to different ways and hence the result might not be the same for all of them. It is advisable to maintain a record of the baby habits and his/her activities. Little diversions in the daily routine can help the baby during his / her episodes of crying.

If the baby is breast fed, it could be better if the mother tries to avoid dairy from her diet as well as many other foods items like onions, spicy foods, cabbage, cauliflower, caffeine, beans etc or foods that increases symptoms of developing gas in stomach. But it is always better checking with the doctor first before eliminating dietary products and even others that are highly proteinous. Bottle-fed babies should have the minimal amount of air that the baby would swallow during bottle-feed. It is advisable to use a bottle having collapsible disposable liners or a curved bottle that are anyway very predominately used these days. The baby should be burped properly and should not be overfed as this worsens the infant colic pain. A normal feed would be fine but can be worked along with the doctor to make necessary changes in formula food also. This has been seen that the more concerned people are in the family and the efforts taken to keep the baby calm actually aggravates the matter. He/ She should be in normal conditions. A smooth car drive or walking in a stroller soothes the baby’s mood. Giving a warm bath, even placing a warm bottle on the baby’s stomach makes the baby comfortable. Baby Swing or a rocking chair are enough of diversions to lift up the baby’s mood. A gentle massage of the baby’s tummy has also worked wonders many a times.

There are lots of parents who probably know how their babies have reacted to infant colic problems. Talking with experienced parents and getting their suggestions regarding methods they have used can also be experimented. There are lots of things that different parents have tried individually and it has worked. It is better to note that not all babies will react to tested methods in the same way. It will help sometimes, whereas some other time it might make the baby uncomfortable. A doctor might recommend use of some anti gas medicine for baby colic remedy, such as Mylicon drops or anti-cramp drops such as Levsin which helps many a times and might not be effective at all during other times. So the best method to deal with Infant colic pain is just to explore ways to keep the baby’s calm and make the baby comfortable. Millions of infants around the globe have been suffering from infantile colic for an extended period of time already. Some signs of colic in babies include unhealthiness, irritability and continuous crying for 3 or more hours that may pursue up to 3 weeks.

In 1950, Dr. Morris, a famous pediatrician from New Haven formally identified and defined the signs of colic in babies.

He stated that if a baby is crying continuously every after feeding, the infant may be suffering from colic or simply known as stomach pain. Normally, a newborn child cries 3 hours throughout the entire day but it is not continuous.

If a baby is crying very loud and his face turns red, parents should be wary already because it is one of the signs of colic in babies. Another sign that an infant is experiencing colic is when his belly is swollen and his feet feels cold. When infants’ hands are tightened, this can also be one of the signs of colic in babies.
Colic can disturb babies any time; whether it is during the night or day. Normally, colic begins to attack during the latter part of the afternoon until early evening; this is the time when the parents or guardians are already tired.

Babies are different from one another; some are more likely to have colic than others. Medical experts deemed that colic is also hereditary. And so, an infant with parents who have colic history is more likely to suffer from the aforementioned disease.

Usually, infantile colic starts from two to three weeks of existence and becomes aggravated at the age of two months. Colic will settle at the age of three months, and will finally disappear at the age of four years.

It is alarming that causes of infantile colic are still unknown in spite of the further research and studies done through the years.

It is quite disappointing for parents who have children who suffered from colic but have no idea of the cause of the disease that made their babies suffer.

What just the parents can do is to be aware and avoid the following actions in order to reduce the chances of their child in having colic illness.

1. A parent must not over feed his/her child because it will not be of any help; it will just hurt the child even more.
2. A parent should not feed his/her child with foods containing too much sugar because it will just aggravate the situation.
3. Parents and guardians must avoid showing their children too much rage, nervousness, terror, and enthusiasm.

If you are a parent and you have observed that your baby is crying continuously for more than 3 hours everyday, and you cannot find any way to make him feel comfortable, then these can be the signs of colic in babies. And you should make your way to consult a medical expert.
