Traveling Tips for Parents with Infants
For parents travelling with young children, there are many tips that can be useful through the trip, including traveling through air. Travelling with children doesn’t have to be stressful; there are many ways that parents can take measures to reduce the stress that can accompany traveling with a child. Caring for a newborn baby or an infant can be stressful enough, without traveling through airplanes and other modes of transportation.
First, it is important to avoid traveling through large crowds such as airports or other train stations and the like until the child is at least three months old. Until the child is three months old their immune system may be compromised, therefore, avoiding travel until the child is three months old can reduce the stress of traveling with a child without ensuring that the child catches a cold or infection that can turn into something more serious.
When flying with your child, or traveling with your infant – allow your child to dress comfortably in clothes that are just as comfortable as the pajamas to ensure that they will be traveling in comfort and that they will be able to sleep through the traveling portion of the trip. Rather than focusing on the importance of the child looking formal once they have reached the destination, consider bringing clothes on to the plane into the carryon luggage which will allow the child to change clothes before arriving at the destination. This is sure to keep the child happy as well as comfortable throughout the duration of the trip.
When traveling, it is important to bring a stroller on the airplane that is approved small enough for travel. These items are often considered special cargo items and must adhere to special sizes and weight regulations. Be sure to check with the website to ensure that the stroller that you are going to be traveling with will be approved and convenient enough for travel.
Traveling with infants does have some benefits. There are many airlines and other means of travel that can come with a reduced cost. For example, when traveling with many airlines, children under the age 24 months fly free as they are often using the parent’s seat and will sit on the lap of the parent. There are also airlines that allow children to fly for a fraction of the price of the adult fare – which can save hundreds of dollars on the next family vacation!
